Movies To Watch: The Truman Show

Via Wikipedia: The Truman Show is an American psychological comedy-drama film[4] directed by Peter Weir, produced by Scott Rudin, Andrew Niccol, Edward S. Feldman, and Adam Schroeder, and written by Niccol. The film stars Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, a man who grew up living an ordinary life that—unbeknownst to him—takes place on a large set populated by actors for a television show about him. The supporting cast includes Laura Linney, Ed Harris, Noah Emmerich, Natascha McElhone, Holland Taylor, Paul Giamatti and Brian Delate.

The Truman Show was originally a spec script by Niccol, inspired by a 1989 episode of The Twilight Zone called "Special Service" (itself written by J. Michael Straczynski).[5] Unlike the finished product, it was more of a science-fiction thriller, with the story set in New York City. Scott Rudin purchased the script and set up production at Paramount Pictures. Brian De Palma was to direct before Weir signed as director, making the film for $60 million—$20 million less than the original estimate. Niccol rewrote the script while the crew was waiting for Carrey to sign. The majority of filming took place at Seaside, Florida, a master-planned community located in the Florida Panhandle.

The film was a financial success, debuting to critical acclaim, and earned numerous nominations at the 71st Academy Awards, 56th Golden Globe Awards, 52nd British Academy Film Awards and 25th Saturn Awards. The Truman Show has been analyzed as an exploration of simulated reality, existentialism, surveillance, religion, metaphilosophy, privacy, and reality television.

What can we learn from this movie:

  • The importance of knowing why you are doing what you are doing.

  • How easy it is for people to sell you on their ‘story’, or how easy it is for the media to paint a narrative to the masses.

  • Why seeing through the matrix is critical.

  • The art of storytelling.

  • The power of our inner selves in knowing what is right for us.

TV Show To Watch: Startup

Netflix: An attempt to launder stolen money finances a cryptocurrency that puts entrepreneurs in business with a corrupt FBI agent and a Miami gang. StartUp is an American streaming television drama series created by Ben Ketai. The series stars Adam Brody, Edi Gathegi, Otmara Marrero, Martin Freeman, Ron Perlman, Addison Timlin, and Mira Sorvino.

Rotten Tomatoes: This gritty drama follows unlikely tech entrepreneurs behind a brilliant idea, and a powerful FBI agent ("Sherlock" star Martin Freeman) who can make or break those he comes in contact with -- not always for the right reasons. Set in Miami, Izzy Morales creates a revolutionary, unregulated digital currency called GenCoin. A young banker named Andy decides to partner with Izzy, infusing the project with cash that Andy's father is desperate to conceal. The trio ends up on the radar of FBI Financial Crimes Agent Phil Rask, who is on Andy's trail.

What can we learn from this show:

  • What decentralization means for society, and why it might it is getting more and more traction in a variety of fields and industries.

  • Why choosing your partners as an entrepreneur is super important. FYI, in my Tech leaders series for The Times Of Israel, many entrepreneurs mention that.

  • How dynamic startups are, and how important it is to be able to maneuver effectively in your industry,

  • How handling pressure is one of the most important capabilities of being an entrepreneur.

  • How to innovate on the fly.

Book To Read: Letting Go, The Pathway To Surrender

I have to say that this book has had such a big impact on me, and I highly recommend it to anyone. It is one of those books where you can read again and again, and remind yourself of all that you have learned through reading this book.

Amazon: Letting Go describes a simple and effective means by which to let go of the obstacles to Enlightenment and become free of negativity.

During the many decades of the author’s clinical psychiatric practice, the primary aim was to seek the most effective ways to relieve human suffering in all of its many forms.

The inner mechanism of surrender was found to be of great practical benefit and is described in this book. Dr. Hawkins’s previous books focused on advanced states of awareness and Enlightenment. Over the years, thousands of students had asked for a practical technique by which to remove the inner blocks to happiness, love, joy, success, health, and, ultimately, Enlightenment. This book provides a mechanism for letting go of those blocks. The mechanism of surrender that Dr. Hawkins describes can be done in the midst of everyday life. The book is equally useful for all dimensions of human life: physical health, creativity, financial success, emotional healing, vocational fulfillment, relationships, sexuality, and spiritual growth.

It is an invaluable resource for all professionals who work in the areas of mental health, psychology, medicine, self-help, addiction recovery, and spiritual development.

What can we learn from this book:

  • How letting go can free you up to live calmly, happily, and with motivation.

  • How to actually let go. The technique itself.

  • The many forms of letting go.

  • How to reach a flow state, where you are constantly letting go and feeling light and free.

  • Why surrendering can be powerful.
